How to Remove a Mustang Alternator Pulley
Safety First
Before beginning any work, disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. This will prevent any electrical shocks from occurring.
Locate the Alternator
The alternator is typically located on the front of the engine, near the top. It is a cylindrical-shaped component with a belt wrapped around it.
Remove the Belt
Using a wrench, loosen the tension on the belt by turning the tensioner pulley counterclockwise. Once the belt is loose, remove it from the alternator pulley.
Remove the Pulley Bolt
The pulley is held in place by a single bolt. Use a wrench to loosen the bolt, then remove it by hand.
Remove the Pulley
Once the bolt is removed, the pulley should come off easily. If it is stuck, you can use a pry bar to gently pry it loose.
Inspect the Pulley
Once the pulley is removed, inspect it for any damage. If the pulley is cracked or damaged, it will need to be replaced.
Clean the Mounting Surface
Use a clean rag to wipe down the mounting surface on the alternator. This will remove any dirt or debris that could interfere with the installation of the new pulley.
Install the New Pulley
Align the new pulley with the mounting surface on the alternator. Press the pulley into place until it is fully seated.
Install the Pulley Bolt
Thread the pulley bolt into the alternator and tighten it using a wrench. Do not overtighten the bolt.
Install the Belt
Place the belt around the alternator pulley and the other pulleys on the engine. Use the tensioner pulley to tighten the belt to the proper tension.
